15th September, Engineer’s day
marked the beginning of Cognition as a national level technical extravaganza
comprising of a plethora of events like Innovations++, Techxter 4.0 and
Techopedia’14. Innovations++, a national level project competition hosted by CSI
student chapter at SIESGST, is an attempt at encouraging and rewarding
ingenious young minds that think out-of-the-box. Techxter 4.0 is a national
level technical paper presentation organised by IETE which receives
participation from across the nation. Techopedia’14, an endeavour by IEEE
student chapter comprises of assortment of quiz, debate and hackathon-like
events. Matrix’14 is another inter-college science Olympiad event exclusively
for the students of first year engineering.

At 10 am, the audiences started settling
down in the GST Auditorium with the dais set for the guests of honour. The dignitaries on the dais included Principal Dr. Alka Mahajan,Head of
Department EXTC Dr. Atul Kemkar, Head of
Department CE Rajesh Khadu, Head of Department IT Prof. Leena
Ladge and Student Council Incharge Mrs. Sumitra Padmanabhan.
The host for the inauguration, Vishal Vinod
greeted everyone present. The presence of the dignitaries was acknowledged by
handing over a memento and a sapling, which is GST’s tradition for welcoming
their guests of honour. Invoking Lord Ganesha’s with a prayer and by lighting
of the holy lamp, the event was flagged off. This was followed by an
encouraging and zeal-evoking speech by Principal Dr. Alka Mahajan wherein she
congratulated all student chapters for putting together such a wonderful
festival. Next to come was Technical Secretary Yash Sharma who gave a gist of
all the technical events in store for this year’s Cognition as well as
highlighted the achievements of technical team for the year. On behalf of
Innovations++ and CSI, Rishikesh Bane spoke a few words about the growth and
future goals of Innovations. Chief Guest 1 spoke about his experiences in JSW
steel and how he believes that there is no end to learning. Another inspiring
thought was shared by Chief Guest 2 regarding how talent can be judged on the
basis of skills and not just grades. He also appreciated the way the event was
planned and executed. Chief Guest gave on insight on the two innovations that
he was part of; ESP and insulator. The subject toppers of the odd semesters
were rewarded with certificates at the hands of the guests. The event concluded
with a video of soldiers at Siachen Glacier, one of the most difficult battle-fields,
with National Anthem playing in the background. The cherry on the cake was Contraption
which like every year managed to enthral the students, teachers and dignitaries
alike.
