The poster read “Spell your way
to glory” and indeed they did it! Varun Shijo and Rohit Narasimhan bagged the
first and second position respectively in the Spelling Bee event of Gravitas '13
by spelling some of the toughest words in the dictionary.
The event, scheduled on the 21st of
September, 2013 i.e. on day two of the literary festival of GST, began at 3 pm
with many enthusiastic faces showing up at the venue CR 401. 20-odd
participants appeared for the first round; of which seven participants reached the
next round by spelling more than 10 out of 20 words right. The seven contenders
were subjected to quick-fire spelling quiz containing five words depending on the
number of the set that appeared on the chit they picked. This round saw the
contestants spelling words from different languages of origin. Four best
spellers faced each other in the final round of this spelling contest where
each finalist had to spell three words derived from various languages like
Spanish, Italian etc. However, there occurred a tie for
the first position and Varun bagged the ‘GST’s Spelling Bee’ title by spelling
the winning word ennui .
