At 1530 hours on 26th
September 2013, nearly 150 enthusiastic students occupied
the GST auditorium filled with inquisitiveness about nuclear technology. And indeed,
their curiosity was well put to rest by the speakers for the evening.

NPCIL has served 26 years in the
field of nuclear power generation and has been held in high esteem and honour
in the said field. GST had the pleasure to welcome five researchers as
dignitaries for the event.
The seminar kicked off with a
brief introduction about nuclear power and how NPCIL has carved its name in
this industry by Mr. A. K. Jain, Additional Chief Engineer (Corp. Comm.), NPCIL.
The students were also given a rough idea as to how India fares in Nuclear
Power consumption at a global level.

Mr. M. P. Sharma, Additional
Chief Engineer (Nuclear Safety group), further enlightened the audience about
how nuclear power stands above all other sources of energy. The facts and figures
in this presentation busted many myths about nuclear energy. Mr. Sharma also
explicated the various activities carried out by NPCIL; design, construction,
commissioning, safety aspects, waste management to name a few. He also threw
some light on the misconception about health hazards associated with people
working in such environments. In a study, it was found out that there were no
significant differences in the health records of people working in such
premises and those not.

Another presentation that
followed was by Mr. K. Girishkumar, Executive Engineer, Health Physics unit,
Directorate of HSE, NPCIL, who explained the radiation-related aspects of
nuclear power. The facts and figures put up in this presentation were
astonishing yet informative. Role of nuclear power in energy security was
another aspect discussed in the course of the seminar.
Dignitaries from NPCIL put forth
a request to our esteemed H.O.D. for organizing an industrial visit to a nuclear power plant, within 100 km proximity, for the EXTC students, which Mr.
Atul Kemkar highly appreciated.

Though organised at very short
notice, the seminar was a huge success.
Throughout the seminar, one thing
was made evident, although indirectly, that we need to keep the exhaustion
levels of Conventional sources in mind, and respect what Dr. Homi Bhabha once said, "No power is costlier than no power."
A very interesting seminar! It was an electrifying experience to be in the presence of nuclear science researchers up close. We later on had an opportunity to interact with Mr. M. P. Sharma personally, and we were really inspired by his courtesy and knowledge. Thank you GST.
